The Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), Civil Society Organization, has called on State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards to implement a dedicated educational program aimed at enlightening Nigerian pilgrims about currency denominations in Saudi Arabia as preparations intensify for Hajj 2025.
The appeal comes in light of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s recent approval for the payment of Hajj Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) via cash in US dollars. In a statement issued by the National Coordinator, IHR, Ibrahim Muhammad, emphasized the importance of educating pilgrims about the exchange rates and value of various currency denominations, particularly between US dollars and Saudi Riyals.
“Many Nigerian pilgrims lack familiarity with foreign currencies, including the US dollar and Saudi Riyal, and often struggle to identify the value of each denomination without proper guidance,” the IHR’s national coordinator said.
“This is especially crucial during Hajj, when thousands of pilgrims engage in financial transactions.” he added.
IHR stressed that it is essential for Nigerian pilgrims to be educated on Saudi Riyals to ensure they can successfully navigate currency exchanges or make purchases without falling victim to exploitation.
In previous years, some pilgrims have reported being shortchanged by unscrupulous individuals in Saudi Arabia, particularly when converting BTA funds.
The organization also highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by female pilgrims who seek unregulated dental services upon arriving in Madinah, which can further expose them to financial pitfalls.
Additionally, IHR urged airlines to incorporate educational content regarding currency transactions into their onboard systems, as part of their corporate social responsibility. By doing so, they can assist in mitigating potential financial losses for intending pilgrims.
“Understanding currency denominations is fundamental for all monetary transactions globally, and it will empower pilgrims to better comprehend the value of their BTA,” the statement concluded.
According to the Central Bank of Saudi Arabia, the most commonly exchanged foreign currencies during Hajj include the US dollar, euro, Singapore dollar, Indian rupee, Indonesian rupiah, Emirati dirham, and Malaysian ringgi.
