The viral photo of a graduating student wearing a garland made up of P1,000 bills has drawn comparisons to the way that former senator Manny Pacquiao and his wife celebrated the recent graduation of their daughter, Mary, from an international school.
A photo shared by Pacquiao’s wife, Jinkee, showed the proud couple posing with their daughter, Princess, after her graduation from Brent International School. The younger Pacquiao held a bouquet of flowers along with her high school diploma.
Several netizens shared Jinkee’s photo alongside the viral picture of the graduating student wearing what has come to be known as the money garland.
“Very humble ang anak ng bilyonaryo nagtapos sa Brent International School Manila. No money garland that is five meters long. She’s only holding a bouquet. We should all be like this, simply giving gifts to our children in public places,” one post read.
“Graduation. Walang perang display. Walang money bouquet, walang money garland. Just like the good old days na wala pang social media,” said another Facebook post.
“Billionaires vs. feeling millionaires,” a netizen said.
“Simple lang. Walay money garland. Ang importante makagraduate,” another Facebook user said.
Other netizens, however, said it was unfair to compare the Pacquiaos with the student and guardian in the viral photo, which was believed to have been taken in a public school.
“Those graduating students studying in low budget school deserve to have money garland for their sacrifices compared to Manny Pacquiao’s child who’s already spending millions for their studies,” a Facebook user remarked.
“This may be unpopular but you have no right to compare parents, especially if you don’t know what they have gone through to provide for their children,” another netizen said.
