Graduation garlands and bouquets that use Philippine banks notes are among gifts given to school “completers” and graduates. However, the Department of Education does not recommend the gesture.
For example, moving-up ceremonies for Grade 10 completers in junior high school and graduation in senior high school at the Mandaue City Sports Complex saw some parents giving money to their children as graduation gift.
The gesture gave way to enterprises such as money garlands for boys and money bouquets for girls.
According to a parent, she had the garland and bouquet pre-ordered through a group chat.
Juliet Buhawe paid P250 for the person who made the bouquet. She provided bills worth P1,000 in the P50 denomination used to resemble flowers, while P150 for the making of the garland. She provided P100 bills worth P1,000 for the garland.
She gave the garland to her son, a Grade 10 completer, and the bouquet to her daughter, a Grade 12 graduate.
“Ginagmay lang ni siya, kay sakto-sakto ra man sad ta [og kahimtang]; ang importante mi-graduate,” Juliet said.
As for Department of Education 7 Director Salustiano Jimenez, he said that it is the discretion of parents to give money to their children as graduation gift. However, he called on parents to be more conscientious about the act done in public display.
The gesture done publicly could either be taken as an act to catch attention and show off on social media or to hurt purposely the sensibilities of others who are financially challenged.
“Though wala gyud ta mag-ingon totally nga ayaw, pero kita lang siguro mga ginikanan or guardians no, ang maghuna-huna kon angay ba gyud ni natong buhaton para sa atong mga anak? Dili ba ni makaapektar sa the whole community?” Dr. Jimenez said.
The public is also reminded that improper handling of Philippine bank notes and coins are punishable by law. Any person who shall violate the decree shall, upon conviction, be punished by a fine based on court ruling, and or by imprisonment of not more than five years.
