COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – State lawmakers are considering a bill that could extend funding for a program providing two free meals a day to every public school student in the state. ‘Healthy School Meals for All’ is in danger of losing that funding, and voters could decide if the program continues.
If this passes, Coloradans can expect to vote on two different measures on the subject in November.
This program was originally passed by voters in 2022. It’s paid for by a change in income tax for those who make more than $300,000. But now, lawmakers are discussing what the future of the program looks like.
The first measure would ask voters if they want the state to spend money on the program, and the second would expand the program and continue taxing those who make more than $300,000.
Ana Bustamante, the Colorado State Manager for Save the Children Action Network, says the changes in funding would not affect every Coloradan.
“Taxing the higher-income folks will save families about $1,300 per child per year,” Bustamante said, “so it is only a small segment of the Colorado population that would see their taxes changed.“
The program is fully funded until December of this year. 11 News will be sure to provide updates on its progress at the state capitol.
