Currency converter in iPhone calculator app. Credit: Letara Draghia
Managing your budget while travelling abroad can be a headache, especially with foreign currencies and fluctuating exchange rates. But iPhone users can now make use of a built-in currency converter in the calculator app, a new feature within the iOS 18 update.
This feature, which has gone viral online, is being hailed as a “game changer” for international travel.
Thanks to Apple’s latest innovation, travellers no longer need to rely on external currency conversion apps, many of which require internet access.
Travel influencer @lifeofthetravelingpin shared her excitement on Instagram, describing it as a “crazy new update” that works without data. She explained, “Now you can easily convert currencies directly from your phone, even when you don’t have an internet connection.” Other users have echoed her enthusiasm, with one commenting, “This is literally the most useful thing I’ve ever seen on Instagram.”
The currency converter is available on iPhones compatible with iOS 18, which was released in September 2024. Unfortunately, older models aren’t supported, so check the compatibility list below before trying the feature.
Next time you’re travelling, or while you’re getting used to your new home country, calculating the cost of groceries will help you understand what exactly you’re getting for your money.
