On April 15, Affinity Federal Credit Union hosted a Financial Reality Fair at Raritan Valley Community College, offering students a hands-on introduction to real-world money management. At a time when young people are preparing to live independently amid rising costs, the fair gave 68 student attendees a chance to experience the financial choices they will face after graduation, from budgeting for rent and groceries to understanding credit and savings.
On the RVCC Business Club Instagram page, students were asked about their favorite part of the event.
“My favorite part is getting the chance to speak with financial professionals and see what it would be like to manage money in the real world,” said a student.
“My favorite part is learning how to save my money, save my time well and learn how to save on pretty much everything,” said another student.
“My favorite part is learning to budget and cost-concern items,” said another.
The event was staffed by 29 volunteers, including 26 from Affinity, as well as representatives from CrossState Credit Union Association, Ridgedale Federal Credit Union (East Hanover) and Advanced Financial Federal Credit Union (four branches in North Jersey). Affinity, which operates 20 branches across the tristate area, regularly partners with high schools and local colleges to promote financial literacy.
“I’m grateful with our partnership with [Raritan Valley Community College],” said Oscar Cordoba, financial education and external affairs manager for Affinity Federal Credit Union, who managed the fair. “We are trying to provide education to the students so they are well-prepared to manage their money and make good financial decisions in life.”
“Later in life, it’s all going to matter,” noted a student attendee.
The next Financial Reality Fairs will be held on April 25 at Union High School and May 2 at Plainfield High School.
